St Peter's Church

Community - St Peter's Church

St Peter's Church  is a Grade I listed building dating from Saxon times.

The Liber Eliensis talks of an important Minster being served by a community of monks in the early 800’s. Over the centuries the Church has undergone many alterations and many periods of neglect. The last major alteration was carried out by the architect Thomas Jeckyll in the 1860’s. The last period of neglect was in the middle of the 20th Century when the churchyard was overgrown with brambles climbing into the Church. Since the late 1970’s the Church has been restored once again and is a “living building”,  fully accessible to wheelchairs and with a toilet.  The parish is linked with the adjoining parishes of Fen Ditton and Teversham under the Vicar, Reverend Michael Bowers.

Services
are held every week:
At 9 am on the first and third Sundays (Holy Communion) and
At 11 am on the 2
nd and 4th Sundays of each month (Morning Worship).
When there is a 5
th Sunday a Joint Parishes service takes place at one of the three Churches.
In addition to the regular weekly Services there are additional Services and events during the year – a Candlelit Carol Service on the second or third Sunday of December as well as a Harvest Service at the end of September or early October.

The Church is used as a venue for concerts throughout the year – Eyehall Musick and Bert Santilly’s accordion players are regular performers. At Petertide (late June) the Church usually holds a weekend of events – an Arts Festival in 2006 and a Village History Weekend (including a school reunion) in 2007.
The Church has recently been awarded a grant from English Heritage to repair the roof and the windows. The Friends of Horningsea Church organise regular fund raising events to enable repairs and improvements to be carried out.

The three Churches produce a monthly magazine, 'New Life' and costs £3 annually.
